What is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?<\/span><\/h1>

Pelvic inflammatory disease or PID is an infection of a woman\u2019s reproductive tract. It can affect the uterus, fallopian tubes, and the ovaries. Scar tissue grows between internal organs leading to ongoing pelvic pain. It can also lead to ectopic pregnancy. This is when the fertilized egg grows outside the uterus. If left untreated, PID can lead to chronic infection. Also, you may not be able to get pregnant.<\/p>

What causes PID?<\/span><\/h1>

Bacteria cause PID. Often the same type of bacteria that causes sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). PID may also develop if bacteria travel through the vagina and the cervix from the use of an intrauterine device (IUD).<\/p>

What are the risk factors for PID?<\/span><\/h1>

Women of any age can get PID. But, those at greater risk of PID from sexually transmitted bacteria include:<\/p>

  • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Women under 25 who are sexually active<\/p><\/li>

  • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Women of childbearing age<\/p><\/li>

  • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Women who use intrauterine devices (IUDs)<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    What are the symptoms of PID?<\/span><\/h1>

    These are the most common symptoms of PID.<\/p>

    • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Pain and tenderness spread throughout the lower abdomen<\/p><\/li>

    • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Pelvic pain<\/p><\/li>

    • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Increased foul-smelling vaginal discharge<\/p><\/li>

    • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Fever and chills<\/p><\/li>

    • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Vomiting and nausea<\/p><\/li>

    • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Pain during urination<\/p><\/li>

    • Abdominal pain (upper right area)<\/p><\/li>

    • Pain during sex<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      The symptoms of PID may look like other conditions or health problems. Always consult your health care provider for a diagnosis.<\/p>

      How is PID diagnosed?<\/span><\/h1>

      Your doctor will do a medical history and a physical and pelvic exam. Other tests may include:<\/p>

      • \u2666<\/span> Exam of vagina and cervix samples under a microscope<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

      • \u2666<\/span> Blood tests<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

      • \u2666<\/span> Pap test.\u00a0<\/strong>For this test, cells are taken from the cervix and checked under a microscope. It’s used to find cancer, infection, or inflammation.<\/p><\/li>

      • \u2666<\/span> Ultrasound.<\/strong>\u00a0This test uses high-frequency sound waves to make an image of the organs.<\/p><\/li>

      • \u2666<\/span> Laparoscopy.\u00a0<\/strong>This is a minor procedure done using a laparoscope. That is a thin tube with a lens and a light. It is inserted into an incision in the abdominal wall to view the reproductive tract.<\/p><\/li>

      • \u2666<\/span> Culdocentesis.<\/strong>\u00a0For this test, a needle is inserted into the pelvic cavity through the vaginal wall to get a sample of pus.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

        How is PID treated?<\/span><\/h1>

        Your health care provider will figure out the best treatment based on:<\/p>

        • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>How old you are<\/p><\/li>

        • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Your overall health and medical history<\/p><\/li>

        • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>How sick you are<\/p><\/li>

        • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>How well you can handle specific medications, procedures, or therapies<\/p><\/li>

        • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>How long the condition is expected to last<\/p><\/li>

        • \u2666<\/span> <\/strong>Your opinion or preference<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

          Antibiotic pills are used to treat PID, especially if it\u2019s due to a STD. For severe infection, you may need to stay in the hospital for intravenous (IV) antibiotics. Sometimes, surgery is needed.<\/p>
